Can request auto-numbering be configured per request type?

This can be achieved however the configuration would be complicated. The request types are linked to the Operations Centers and the Engagement request processing rules. That means a new Operation Center would need to be setup for each request type, so that they would have different auto-numbering schemes. On the other hand, an engagement only allows for one Operation Center to be selected. Therefore for every request type that requires a different numbering scheme, a separate engagement would also need to be setup to specify a different Operations Center (i.e. a request numbering scheme).
