Data provider configuration - Entity of configurable field (CP 2010)

Question
When creating a Data Provider, the Help content makes reference to the following:

8. (Optional) From the Entity of Configurable Field list, select the entity that allows for configurable fields.
Only one configurable field entity can be associated to a data provider.

9. (Optional) From the Column of Configurable Field list, select the ID column that corresponds to the specified entity type.
For example, if the entity is request, the column would be request ID.

Please can you tell me what "Entity of the configurable field" drop-down is for? It's not clear from the documentation when this is required.

Also, the field in 9 above is marked as Optional in the help content, but it seems to be mandatory?

Answer
In the “Entity of Configurable Field” list you can pick an entity, if you want the configurable fields of this entity to be available in Report Designer, when this data provider is being used for a report. If you select “Contact”, for example, you will be able to select contact configurable fields along with the fields of this data provider, when creating a data collection in Report Designer.

In the “Column of Configurable Field” list you need to pick the field which holds the ID of the entity that is selected. For example, if you wish to display contact configurable fields you need to pick the ContactID field in this list.

When saving the data provider configuration window, you may be asked to enter a value for “Column of Configurable Field”, which is a defect in the application and is planned to be fixed in a future release. In that case it is enough to pick any ID value for this field, while leaving “Entity of Configurable Field” as empty and “Perform access checks on configurable fields” as unchecked. This value will not have any impact.
