Cannot edit custom field meta data

A configurable field is set to not editable, why in System Management - Metadata the 'not editable' checkbox cannot be unselected as it is disabled?

Answer
Please check if this is a calculated custom field. This setting cannot be changed for calculated fields. If this should become a user editable field, the calculation needs to be removed.
