Expense Attachments v2012 SP2

Is there any technical information/recommendations on the impact of expense receipt attachments in SP2? Our current solution used 100GB in the past year. One specific question being asked is if attachments are compressed when saved.

The expense attachment is using CPUpload control, the attachments are not compressed when saved. Any changes to this control would also affect the knowledge attachments.
The CPUpload control is located in the folder: \Shared Components\UserControl\CPUpload, it does not do compression.
