API cannot update hidden custom field (UDF) (2014)

QUESTION

When updating hidden fields through the API, an error message is returned and the field is not updated.

ERROR

11:54:03 AM Level2: Error: Number= -12 Message= Error found in field: FieldItem [XXXXXX] does not exist.

An error has occured! Message: , Source Changepoint.CPWebService.Engagement.SaveUDF, Message Number -12


ANSWER

This is working as designed. A hidden field cannot be updated, be it through the user interface or through the API.
