When Tasks Cannot Be Replanned

Overview

During the Update Forecast process, you may receive a message indicating that some tasks cannot be automatically replanned.
This occurs when task constraints prevent the system from adjusting task dates or work distribution.

This document explains why this happens and how to resolve it.

Why This Message Appears

Tasks cannot be automatically replanned when they include manual constraints that conflict with the selected replanning date.

Common constraint scenarios include:

  • Tasks with a Fixed Duration

  • Tasks with a Due Date constraint

  • Tasks using a Fixed Duration work policy

  • The selected replanning date extends beyond the task’s Due Date

When any of these conditions apply, Update Forecast cannot shift task dates or redistribute work automatically.

How To Resolve the Issue

Step 1: Identify the Blocking Constraint

  1. Open the task that could not be replanned.

  2. Review the task configuration, focusing on:

    • Duration type

    • Work policy

    • Due Date

Step 2: Adjust or Remove the Constraint

Depending on the scenario, take one of the following actions:

  • Change the task from Fixed Duration to a flexible duration type.

  • Remove or update the Due Date so it aligns with the new replanning date.

  • Update the task Work Policy if it restricts automatic replanning.

Step 3: Run Update Forecast Again

  1. Return to the project or task.

  2. Run Update Forecast with the desired replanning date.

  3. Verify that the task is successfully replanned.

Key Notes

  • Tasks with strict constraints require manual adjustment before they can be replanned.

  • Update Forecast does not override Fixed Duration or Due Date constraints.

  • Removing or relaxing constraints allows the system to automatically recalculate dates and work.

Decision Table: Task Constraints and Replanning Behavior

Constraint Type Configuration Replanning Date Within Allowed Range Replanning Date Exceeds Due Date Automatic Replanning Supported Required Action
None Flexible duration, no Due Date Supported Supported Yes No action required
Due Date Only Due Date defined Supported Not Supported No Update or remove the Due Date, then rerun Update Forecast
Fixed Duration Duration is fixed Not Supported Not Supported No Change duration to a flexible type before replanning
Fixed Duration Work Policy Work policy set to Fixed Duration Not Supported Not Supported No Change the task work policy to allow replanning
Fixed Duration + Due Date Both constraints applied Not Supported Not Supported No Remove or adjust all blocking constraints
Due Date + Flexible Duration Due Date defined, flexible duration Supported Not Supported No Adjust the Due Date or select an earlier replanning date
