Creating dependencies between items

NOTE

This functionality is available only for users with the Enterprise subscription type.

You can create dependencies between roadmap items, which you can use to sequence and align team work with strategies and outcomes.

You can create the following types of dependencies:

  • outgoing dependencies indicate that the current item impacts the linked item
  • incoming dependencies indicate that the current item is impacted by the linked item

These dependencies indicate only that one of the items impacts or somehow has an effect on the other item. There is no relationship between the dates of the linked items; that is, the item with the outgoing dependency does not have to start or finish before the other item can start. Changes to the dates of one of the items does not affect the dates of the other item.

Creating a Dependency Between Items

You can create outgoing and ingoing dependencies from any item on the roadmap.

  1. Click the item in the list or on the roadmap to display the Details pane.

    • To create a link to an item that impacts the current item, click Add incoming dependency.
    • To create a link to an item that is impacted by the current item, click Add outgoing dependency
  3. Click the Roadmap item list and then select the item.
  4. Enter a description of the dependency.

Deleting a Dependency

You can delete a dependency by removing it from either of the linked items.

  1. Click either of the linked items.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Scroll down to view the Dependencies section.
    • Click the Dependencies dependencies.png tab.
  3. On the dependency that you want delete, click More options ellipse_vertical_dk_gray.png > Remove dependency. The dependency is removed.

Viewing dependencies

All roadmap users can view dependencies between items that they have access permissions to view. Roadmaps for Enterprise users (users that have Enterprise subscriptions) can additionally create and edit dependencies.

After a dependency has been created between two items, a link icon appears on the items. In the timeline, an arrow representing the dependency starts on the item that has the outgoing dependency and ends on the item with the incoming dependency. A partial arrow appears if the link is to or from an item that is in a collapsed group by section.

To show (or hide) dependency lines between items

In the Roadmaps toolbar, click dependencies.png > Show dependency lines (or Hide dependency lines).
