Waterfall Chart

Waterfall charts can give you insight into what is behind changes in total values between a a given starting portfolio and a given ending portfolio. The starting and ending portfolios are represented in the bars on the left and right of the chart, respectively. The floating bars between the portfolios indicate the value of the difference between them. We also have a video tutoral on waterfall charts here.

Waterfall charts are accessed from a portfolio's Summary page. You can configure a waterfall chart by making selections in the options above the chart.

Chart Option Description
Starting Portfolio Selects a portfolio to define the left-most column of the chart. The options available for selection will vary based on your variance analysis settings.
Ending Portfolio Selects a portfolio to define the right-most column of the chart. The options available for selection will vary based on your variance analysis settings.
Left Selects a quantitative field to define the values on the left axis.
Breakdown Selects a field that defines how the bars are split along the bottom axis of the chart.
Group Select field to group total values in each bar.
Color Selects a field that determines the color coding of the chart.
Annotate

You have the following additional display options in this chart:

  • Name - Displays the label of each segment
  • Value - Displays the value of each segment
  • % - Displays what percentage of the bar the segment represents
  • Totals - Displays the total value of the bar
  • Legend - Displays a legend for the chart. The legend displays the color coding.

Chart options

You can use the Chart Options Panel to add additional elements that can highlight or otherwise enhance parts of the chart.

To access the Chart Options Panel:
  1. Open the waterfall chart in your portfolio.
  2. Click the three parallel lines icon in the upper-right corner of the chart area.

This opens the Chart Options Panel. The chart options are described in the tables below.

           

Legend controls

Chart Option Description
Legend font size The slider adjusts the legend's font size. Move the slider to right to increase size for better readability or to the left to decrease size and fit more items in the legend.
Legend on bottom Render the legend below the chart instead of on the right side.
Legend title Enter a title here to override the default legend title. You can also type a space to have no title.

           

           

Sizing controls

Chart Option Description
Block annotation font size Adjust the size of the bar chart's in-block annotation labels.
Uniform block annotation sizes Make all block annotations the same size, skipping labels that do not fit.

           

           

Axis controls

Chart Option Description
Axis label font size Adjusts the sizing of the axis labels. This does not affect the axis tick labels.
Axis labels outside Display the axis labels on the outside of the chart axes, rather than their default position.
Left axis label Enter a label to override the default left axis label text. You can also type a space to display nothing.
Bottom axis label Enter a label to override the default bottom axis label text. You can also type a space to display nothing.
Bottom axis number formatting Select an option to override the default number format of the x-axis.
Left axis number formatting Select an option to override the default number format of the y-axis.
Hide axis tick labels Remove the tick labels from numeric axes.
Rotate category labels Rotates the x-axis tick labels 45 degrees counter-clockwise.

           

           

Miscellaneous controls

Chart Option Description
Show gridlines Extends the axis ticks into the graph area as gridlines.
