Application Standards Management

Summary

A key component of managing an application portfolio is the comparison of application standards against the technical attributes of the inventory.

The Goal of Application Standards

Simply stated, the goals of Application Standards fall into the following categories:

  1. Ensure the new applications and changes can be supported within the existing organization.
  2. Ensure the new applications and changes will integrate with other applications and technologies within the portfolio.
  3. Ensure the new applications are from viable sources so that vendor support will be available.
  4. Leverage existing technologies and relationships so that the cost of ownership is managed.

These goals collectively support the overarching objective of the application portfolio, which is to meet the business needs of the enterprise.  This is a crucial point - application standards ultimately exist to serve the needs of the business. If the two are frequently in conflict, the standards are likely out of alignment with overarching business objectives and should be modified accordingly.
