Enterprise One Q&As - July 2020 Power BI Update Webinar

Question
Can Power BI respect security Levels? Yes - when using column set models or OData datasets, native grants are respected. So the model or dataset may contain all projects but if you can only see 10...10 will show on your reports. As mentioned as a point of clarification on the webinar - Tabular models will natively have grant security built in but OData dataset reports do need a bit of extra work to get that security layered in. Please see this CSC article that explains a bit more along with a sample/template file: https://success.planview.com/Planvie...r_BI_and_OData
Is PowerBI for CTM module also going to be discussed? For this webinar we will focus mainly on PRM datasets and My Overview embedded tiles. The dashboard design techniques can still apply when connected to the CTM data via the CTM OData feed.
Are the compatibility issues going back and forth from May 2019 to May 2020. I know any file saved in May 2020 can't be downgraded back to  May 2019. You're correct. Once you open/save a report within May 2020 you may receive some warnings and some functionality may break. That said - May 2019 content should work as expected when opened in May 2020.
Are you portfolio's set in filters? How can we limit the portfolio's a user sees? For column set models you can send one or more portfolios to the model definition - since data grants are respected the user will not be able to see projects they are not granted to.
When looking at the Resource Portfolio Overview, were you able to tie your Power BI to an actual Resource Portfolio, to allow people to view their own Resource Portfolio definition in the Power BI report? When I created the column set model I chose only one portfolio - but you can absolutely include many/all portfolios in that column set model which will then give you an option to include a portfolio filter for user selection.
Can the buttons be linked to another Power BI tile? Or do you have to stay within the same Power BI report and tabs associated with it? Stay tuned! Kevin will show something akin to this shortly. Toward the end of Kevin's portion of the webinar he has a button that links back to my dashboard sample.
When do we need to start using the May 2020 version?  Is it tied to a specific Planview version, or is there a set date for the upgrade on the report server.  My company is currently on Planview 17.9, and going to 18 in the near future.  Also, do our reports on previous versions need to be touched, or are they backwards compatible?  Thanks! All customers at v15 Enterprise One and up can take advantage of May 2020. We're leveraging the shared Report Server across those versions.
Does the customized theme have to be imported each time you open Power BI Desktop, to modify or create a new report? If you're starting from a brand new Power BI desktop file then yes you'll need to re-import the custom theme. That said - this would be a great way to introduce a Power BI template that all new reports start from and just make sure that template has the theme loaded.
Can we change themes for tables? Yes - there are table and matrix areas of that theme UI showed. You can also manually add additional JSON instructions to the theme file to get a bit more advanced.
Can the dates and year filters for resource assignment be aligned with the fiscal calendar so that reporting on dates are consistent with other reporting dates? It's my understanding that the time dimension created from RMA will be related to the schedule/assignments calendar and no capability exists to align with fiscal calendar.
Is there a Gantt Chart view in Power BI? There is a Gantt custom visual that while limited is fairly interesting.

With this version, Is it now possible to conditionally format tables to show something like a RAG status to reflect the text in the cell? (IF cell contains Green, then cell colors Green) - there seems to be an issue where the data defaults to "count of RAG" instead of allowing us to customize the conditions based on the text? - this issue seems only only affect live data from PV, offline data from Excels seem to be fine. Yes! Within the conditional formatting page: Conditional Formatting > Background Color > Format by: Field value > Based on field > Manager Assessment > Summarization > First
In this new version, if we were creating a project level report for a singular project, if we want a Power BI Card to change color to represent the Project RAG, can we do that? because conditional formatting seems to be locked down to "Count of" for live Planview data. meaning we cant conditionally format Yes! Within the conditional formatting page: Conditional Formatting > Background Color > Format by: Field value > Based on field > Manager Assessment > Summarization > First
Are the .pbix files from Power Bi 2018 compatible with Power Bi 2020? Yes. You can move those report files forward without the need to adjust the report to get it to work.
When using the URL link....if updates are made will it instantly be available in BI when the user navigates back to BI? Not sure I fully understand the question - but if you're using a dynamic link (url is built/constructed based on data coming from Planview) then the value of the url will be updated based on the last time the dataset/report was refreshed.
I don't think you can edit queries if you are not using the tabular models? Correct - with OData the other Power BI modeling capabilities remain available where when pointing to analysis services Power BI desktop greys those out. Modeling on top of an existing model is deemed a no-no. :)
If you select a url link and you do not have grants/permissions to the view/feature in Planview, what happens? Grants are built in to the data sources so if you don't have grants to see an entity (work or resources for example) you won't see it in the report. So linking to a page will already ensure grants are in place.
Will there be the possibility in the future to have Power BI on more than My Overview?  Or will Planview create a new tab for just reporting as we already have so much on My Overview A re-imagining of report/Power BI tiles and the ribbon overall is still a roadmap item. First would be expanding Power BI tiles to the other entity ribbons.
I missed the prerequisites to start using May 2020.  Is this in the August release, or can I go now?  I am assuming i need to update my local report server plus my desktop version.  I am unsure if I also need to wait for a Planview update. Update Report Server version + desktop and you're ready to go. We support this update for v15 and forward.
How did you build the link? I believe Kevin showed the 'how to' on the link building. I pulled the DAX statement out of his PBIX for additional clarification: Planview Project URL = "https://[environment].pvcloud.com/planview/PLP/EntityLandingPage.aspx?pt=PROJECT&scode=" & 'Project Dimension'[ppl code]
Can I now bring in external data that is not in the Planview data sets and have that data be visible in the Power BI tile in Planview? We do some data source checks when uploading the report to the Planview reporting server so as of now Planview Enterprise One datasets are only support for embedding on My Overview.
Are these reports available after this webinar? As mentioned on the webinar - we are unable to share the report files as they are pointing to internal environments behind the Planview firewall.
With this version, can we extract report to excel or pdf or ppt? Each widget has a native export to excel set of options. In desktop you can export to PDF. Keep in mind - you lose ALL interactivity we know and love in Power BI in the exported content.
Is there more info or documentation on this piece on success center...what Kevin is showing now to decomp tree, predefined hierarchy? No specific documentation on the Success Center for the specific dashboard design techniques but these two links are a good starting place to look over all the newly introduced functionality from a Power BI perspective with some how-to: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/...ature-summary/
Once I connect to PowerBI through odata - how do I retrieve data from SSRS_WebService.rsds Power BI does not have access to that specific data source - only SSRS/Report Builder reports have that data source access.
Can we extract Each widget has a native export to excel set of options. In desktop you can export to PDF. Keep in mind - you lose ALL interactivity we know and love in Power BI in the exported content.
What about printing? Each widget has a native export to excel set of options. In desktop you can export to PDF. Keep in mind - you lose ALL interactivity we know and love in Power BI in the exported content. Also keep in mind that you can always screenshot with your favorite snipping tool and print from there, or the export to pdf in desktop can then access printing.
Is there an ability to get the current user's ID? For example, I'd like to reduce options in a Portfolio filter by showing a user only their Portfolios? For odata sourced reports there is the ability to add user security. Please see this article with sample template: https://success.planview.com/Planvie...r_BI_and_OData
I don't recall seeing HOW to build the Hierarchy filter Great news! You don't need to build it - if you add a hieararchy from the fields area of Power BI to the filter object, it will recognize the hierarchy and automatically group with expand/collapse within the filter widget.
Is it possible to share what people are building? We have a PRM admin user forum and it would be cool to see other ideas. We are discussing a customer/community forum type approach where customers can share ideas and samples but as mentioned on the webinar - we are unable to share the report files as they are pointing to internal environments behind the Planview firewall.
Where can I download Power BI 2020? Link will be in the PDF copy of the powerpoint shown but here it is:  https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down...ldownloads_all
Can we please include the open enrollment training information when sending out this deck & recording? Thank you Here's a link: https://success.planview.com/Planvie...rce_Management
How do you build grants into the report? Yes - when using column set models or OData datasets, native grants are respected. So the model or dataset may contain all projects but if you can only see 10...10 will show on your reports. As mentioned as a point of clarification on the webinar - Tabular models will natively have grant security built in but OData dataset reports do need a bit of extra work to get that security layered in. Please see this CSC article that explains a bit more along with a sample/template file: https://success.planview.com/Planvie...r_BI_and_OData
Is there a published sample on how to include required data to honor grants? For OData sourced reports there is the ability to add user security. Please see this article with sample template: https://success.planview.com/Planvie...r_BI_and_OData
Can OData data sources in Planview Power BI encompass all three portfolios: Request, Work and Resource Portfolios? This was not possible at all with Column Sets. Yes! This is one of the many flexible advantages of going the OData route. You can dictate which entities are brought in where column set models are focused on a single entity type (work/resources/strategy etc).
