Objectives

What are objectives?

Objectives allow you to capture and track progress toward high-level goals your organization wants to achieve. When creating objectives, you can specify the following information:

The description of the tasks, goals, or other details about what you want to achieve.
The owner of the objective.
The OKR level, which is the organization level at which to create the new objective.
The parent objective, which can be an objective from the same product or from another product if you are using connected OKRs.
The values for any custom attributes that a Planview Admin administrator added for OKRs.

You can create the key results for the objective at the same time or later.

Objectives are displayed on the Objectives and Key Results screen under their respective OKR levels when in card view ( ) or in a hierarchical table in list view ( ).

Each OKR on the screen includes a progress bar, which shows the percentage of the objective that has been completed, based on the average progress of connected key results. The percentage bar is color-coded as follows:

Light green: 70% or higher.
Light yellow: Between 40% and 69%.
Light red: 39% or lower.

NOTE

Objectives show progress based only on the progress of their child key results. The progress of items at lower levels is not included.

Depending on whether you are in card view or list view, the screen can also show additional information such as the number of key results ( connected key results icon ) connected to the objective, the number of child objectives () connected to the objective, and the target end date for the objective. The Objective screen

You can hover over an objective for additional details or click an objective to open its Objective screen, which includes the following tabs:

Details: Shows the objective name, owner, dates, objective level, and parent objective (if any). You can modify these details.
Key Results: Shows all key results connected to the objective. Click a key result to open or delete it. You can also create new key results on this tab.
Child Objectives: Shows all objectives that are children of the objective. You can click a child objective to open it or remove the parent-child connection. You can also connect more objectives as children.
History: View the activity stream for the objective, which contains the history of modifications made to the objective or its key results.

Creating an objective

NOTE

You can also create a new objective as a child objective from directly within another objective. See Creating a new child objective for more information.

To create an objective:

Navigate to the Objectives and Key Results screen from AgilePlace or Planview Portfolios.
Click New Objective.
In the Objective box, enter a short summary of the tasks, goals, or other details about what you want to achieve through this objective.
(Optional) In the Description box, enter a description with any additional details you want to provide for the objective, such as contextual and supplementary information.
(Optional) Click the Owner list and select an owner for the objective. The owner must have at least a read-only permission to the parent strategy.
Click Start Date and/or End Date to enter a target starting date, end date, or date range for the objective.
In the Objective Level list, select the OKR level (such as Enterprise, Portfolio, Program, or Team) at which to create the new objective. The OKR settings determine which level options are available.
(Optional) If you want this objective to be a child of another objective, take the following actions:
1. Click the Scope type list and select the scope type as follows:
  - If you are not using connected OKRs, click Strategy.
  - If you are using connected OKRs and the parent objective you want is a strategy in Planview Portfolios, click Strategy.
  - If you are using connected OKRs and the parent objective you want is a work item in Planview Portfolios, click Work.
  - If you are using connected OKRs and the parent objective you want is in Planview AgilePlace, click Board.
2. Click the Objectives list and select a parent objective for the new objective.
  
  TIP
  
  You can enter text in the Objectives box to filter the selections.
In the Custom Attributes section, click each custom attribute you want to set and select an option. Some attributes may be required. For more information about custom attributes, see Getting started with objectives and key results (OKRs).


TIP

If an attribute has a  icon, you can hover over the icon for a description.
Click Save.
The new objective appears in the Objectives row of the appropriate OKR level on the screen. If you selected a parent objective that was not already on the screen, that parent also appears in the Objectives row in the appropriate section.

Modifying an objective

To edit details for an objective:

Navigate to the Objectives and Key Results screen from AgilePlace or Planview Portfolios.
On the screen, click the objective you want to edit. You can also click > Open in the objective.
Modify settings such as the objective name, owner, or dates in the Details tab as needed.
Click Save, Save & Close, or Save & Create Another.

Deleting an objective

NOTE

When you delete an objective, all of its child objectives and key results are also deleted.

To delete an objective:

Navigate to the Objectives and Key Results screen from AgilePlace or Planview Portfolios.
In the objective you want to delete, click > Delete Objective. You can also click > Delete Objective from the Details tab in the objective.
Click OK to confirm.
