Visualize Your Projectplace Data Using Power BI

Video: Visualize your Projectplace data using Power BI

Power BI for Projectplace

With the Planview Projectplace Power BI data sets, you can extract and visualize your Projectplace data directly in Microsoft Power BI. Use your Projectplace sign-in credentials to interactively view key statistics, find out who your most active and productive team members are, and identify at-risk cards and activities across workspaces in your Projectplace account. You can also extend the out-of-the box dashboard and reports to get insights that are most important to you. There are currently two different dataset options available.

Dataset for Workspace Managers for Power BI Desktop

This dataset contains data for all workspaces that you own or are an administrator of:

  • Activities, Boards, and Cards and their related data
  • Workspace Members and Card assignments (currently Primary assignees only)
  • Estimated and Reported time
  • Custom Fields on Cards and Activities defined in your workspaces

This dataset is designed to:

  • simplify the creation of reports, and
  • align the naming of data elements to match the current naming within Projectplace.

The new dataset is available for use with Power BI for Desktop (November 2018 version or later), which is a free Microsoft application, that you can install on your local computer. The Power BI for Desktop application allows you to connect to, transform, and visualize your workspace data.

To activate Power BI for this dataset:

  1. Download Power BI for Desktop.
  2. Open Power BI for Desktop after the download has completed and select 'Get Data' and then 'Planview Projectplace (Beta)' from the list
  3. The OData URL to use is https://odata3.projectplace.com/pm
  4. Login to Projectplace.
  5. When prompted, allow Power BI to access your Projectplace information.
  6. Select what data to download from the available listed tables.
  7. Wait while the system loads the data. The activation process for Power BI is completed after the data has been loaded.
  8.  Start using Power BI.

We have also created a template file that contains the basic relationships between the tables included in the dataset as well as some example graphs so that you don't have to start from scratch. The Template file can be downloaded from here. Please read the Get started information on the first page to learn how to access your data when using this template.

Old Dataset with Some Basic Dashboards are Available via the Power BI Web Service:

This dataset contains data that you have access to in Projectplace today:

  • Activities
  • Boards
  • Cards and some related data

The dataset is made up of a collection of the Projectplace api's. Some of these api's are no longer in use, and in that case, those elements in the dataset will be empty.

The naming convention does not always match the terminology used in Projectplace. Please be aware that we are planning to deprecate the old dataset in favor of the new, more optimized, datasets that you will find above (the dataset for Workspace Managers is the first in a planned series of new datasets).

To activate Power BI for this dataset:

  1. Sign up for Power BI. Use the Self-Service signup for Power BI.
  2. Add the Projectplace content pack and select the Projectplace by Planview content pack for Power BIUse the OData URL.
  3. Login to Projectplace with your credentials so that Power BI can access your Projectplace information.
  4. Wait while the system loads the data. The activation process for Power BI is completed after the data has been loaded.
  5. Start using Power BI.

To learn more about how to use Power BI and work with the workspace data to create your own reports, please refer to the Microsoft Power BI help documentation.
