Setting Status Rules for Strategic Planning

This article applies to Planview® Enterprise One release 15 – Portfolio and Resource Management.

Required Features

Architect EPM and Set Up System.

Required Global Options

Use Strategic Management.

To set Lifecycle Controlled rules: Enable Strategic Lifecycles is also required.


The Strategic Management option is available on the Administration menu.

To set the status rules for strategic planning:

  1. On the menu bar, click Administration > System Configuration > System Options.

    The Administer Application screen appears.

  2. Click Status Rules.
  3. Click Strategic Planning (Strategic Status).

    The Edit Status Rules for Strategic Planning screen appears. That screen's Status column lists the status values to which conditions can be applied. The other columns are relevant to the conditions for which you can set status rules. For descriptions of such conditions, see the table that follows this procedure.
  4. Set rules as needed by selecting the appropriate check boxes.
  5. Click Save.

Condition Column



Indicates that the status is considered Active for the purposes of lifecycle synchronization steps between strategic levels or between strategic entities and work.

Lifecycle Controlled

Indicates that the status is to be set as a lifecycle step, and should not be available as a manual selection (unless the entity has previously reached that status, or has a lifecycle model with a Secondary Segment anchored by that status).

Commit Dates

Indicates that an entity with that status is in progress. When a strategic entity has a status marked to Commit Dates, the Enterprise Commitment process will convert its planned dates into committed dates. When a strategic entity has a status marked to not commit dates, the Enterprise Commitment process will not convert its planned dates into committed dates. Instead, it will push the planned dates into the future.

Clear Planned Dates

Indicates that when the entity is set to that status, its planned dates should be removed.


  • The default initial status value, which is typically Requested, cannot be controlled by a lifecycle.
  • If a project lifecycle model has a step such as Wait for Status of Initialized on Immediate Children, it is possible that some children may have reached that status and proceeded on to a subsequent status. This is considered as meeting the requirements of the wait step, and the parent lifecycle model will then continue, as long as the child is now in an Active status as defined on the Edit Status Rules screen. If one child has reached the status of Initialized but that child has been placed On Hold, the conditions of the Wait step would not have been met.
