Summary

Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) is the integrated approach to managing the entire lifecycle of a software application, from governance and approval through development, maintenance, and retirement.

Managing the Application Lifecycle

A software application is not simply an isolated utility that gets created on a whim and then used in perpetuity. Generally it is part of a larger organizational ecosystem that includes business processes, financial planning, and strategy. Moreover, its lifecycle is tied to overall technology lifecycle necessary for an organization to remain competitive.

Much like people have lifecycle events marked by certain stages and milestones, so do applications. And, like people, there are lifecycle events that occur before an application’s birth and beyond its lifetime.  Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) deals with all of these by managing an application’s life from requirements analysis and governance through modeling, design, building, testing, maintenance, and ultimately, retirement and archiving.

This requires the integration of multiple disciplines. And, with ALM 2.0 (a term coined by Forrester), it is expanding even further to include project and portfolio management, and seamless collaboration, workflow, and reporting across an expanse of toolsets. In this way, ALM fulfills its mission of better aligning software applications (throughout their entire lifecycle and beyond) to the business.
