Understanding Risks vs. Issues

Summary

Many people confuse risks with issues, and how both relate to changes. This best practice explores the nature of risks and issues, the differences between them, and how they relate to project changes.

In simplest terms, a risk is something that might happen, and an issue is something that is either happening now or is about to happen. In other words, a risk may require future action, but an issue requires immediate action. In essence, a risk impacts the future state, while an issue impacts the current state.
