Cognos 10 error: Cannot connect to gateway

SYMPTOMS

This error message can occur on multiple occasions. E.g. after restoring the production system over to test, the Changepoint data source needs to be redone, pointing to the Changepoint test database. Then, when testing the connection, this error can occur.

It can also happen when reports are to be exported from the contentstore database, or under other circumstances.


RESOLUTION

Open the IBM cognos configuration utility (cogconfigw.exe) first on the Cognose server, then on the gateway and save the existing settings (even if no change is necessary). This will regenerate some internal cryptographic information required by the gateway and the server in order to connect to each other correctly.
